KEEP YOUR STUDENTS FOCUSED!

As we approach the holiday season, it seems our students sense the frenzy and begin to test their teachers’ patience. Here are some ideas to help keep your students focused and on task.
For some inexplicable reason, at this time of year, students forget that there are rules and procedures and need to be reminded frequently. Remember to review your expectations and be consistent with your procedures.

As you present a lesson, have students stop and “chew” on what they’ve just heard. Have them reflect in a journal, have them write in a graphic organizer, and have them discuss the important points with their neighbor or at their table.

Break up assignments into chunks. Give students a brain break or stretch break. Students get tired of sitting too long. Have them do jumping jacks or stretch and touch their toes. Just remember to state your expectations for their behavior before you give them their break. It is much easier to get students back to work and back on task when they know your expectations.

Give students the opportunity to make choices. Have students choose the activity they want to do first, or have them choose between two different assignments. Have learning stations or centers and have students rotate throughout the stations.

Let students know what to expect throughout the day. Post the agenda and review the events of the day. This is particularly important when there is a change in the day to day routine (i.e. assemblies, field trips, pictures, guest speakers). Give students a sense of security by explaining and letting them know what to expect.

Keep these ideas in mind as you plan for the coming weeks. Reflect on what works and don’t be afraid to ask your colleagues for ideas to help you get through this holiday season.
