SUCCESSFUL LEARNERS
Do your students know how to study? Do they know the importance of studying?
Many teachers take study skills for granted and assume that students already know how to study. Study skills must be taught. If you want your students to be successful, then take the time to teach these skills. Talk to your students, ask them about their study habits and test preparation. You might be surprised at your findings!
Here are some habits to consider:
- Students should have a designated time and place to study
- Students should review and rewrite their notes as part of their study routine
- Students should be encouraged to use graphic organizers, Venn diagrams, or outlines when rewriting their notes, or flashcards with important facts
- Limit distractions while studying (turn off the TV, cell phones, etc.)
- Review notes with a friend
- Take a quick break from homework or studying every twenty minutes
