ESTABLISHING RULES

Many teachers choose to develop classroom rules with their students. Some teachers choose to develop their rules before the school year begins and then explain and teach the rules on the first day. The key is to do what is most comfortable for you. Either way, when discussing your classroom rules, remember to integrate high order questions and make it a true two-way discussion. Plan your questions ahead of time in order to ensure that you are asking questions at Bloom’s higher levels. Ask questions such as:
“What would happen if…?”
“What does … look like…feel like?”
“Why is it important to…?”
“How do you feel when…?”
Have students role play and illustrate the rules.

Whether you choose to develop your class rules with your students, or whether your rules are already developed, discuss the importance of rules. Asking thought provoking questions helps students to have a deeper understanding and acceptance of rules and helps to establish an orderly classroom environment. Then, once the rules are established, be consistent in enforcing those rules.
Happy teaching!
