POINT OUT THE POSITIVE!

Want to increase your teaching time and spend less time correcting students? Then, point out the positive! Taking time to develop and practice positive reinforcement will create a culture for learning. When teachers focus on and reward positive behavior, students respond eagerly.

Here are some thoughts:

  • Have coupons or teacher dollars to distribute to students as they display desirable behavior
  • Send positive notes to parents or caregivers. Prepare a checklist of all of your students at the beginning of each grading period to track the notes you send home. Be sure to send a note home for each student at least once each semester. An even better practice would be to send a positive note home at least once each grading period
  • Create a brag board for every time the class receives a compliment
  • Keep a journal to record ideas for positive rewards
