Checking For Understanding
How do you know that your students know? How do you check for understanding? If you wait until the test, you’ve waited too long.
Weave questions throughout your instruction. Explain, define and model. Ask questions beyond basic knowledge and comprehension.
Ask questions at the higher end of Bloom’s Taxonomy. Use strategies such as pair-share, or small group discussions, thumbs up, or holding up white boards to check for understanding. Can your students re-state your main ideas in their own words?
Use higher order thinking questions to help develop students who can become critical and creative thinkers.
